Why Does My Mockup Design Not Fit the Canvas When Using Bulk Mockup?

Learn why mockup designs don’t fit the canvas in Bulk Mockup and how to fix smart objects using guides and clean layer structure

Hi there, so like you mentioned the mockup file does not fit the entire canvas or the artwork does not fit in there. So here is the file and I’ll investigate why that is happening. When bulk mockup works, it works on the smart object layer.

It opens up the smart object layer like that, I mean it would just double click on the smart object, it open here and then it would place the design file and when it places the design file, let me grab any of our design, do I have a design, sorry I do not have a design, let me pick up any of this file, does not matter, let me grab this one. So when bulk mockup works, it would omit all the layers that you have inside the smart object and it will enlarge and keep the design file something like this. And this is exactly what happens in your case and if we do that, this is how it appears, which is what we do not want to happen.

So ideally, I mean the template that should be set up, the frame should have been on this file and inside the smart object, it should not be, I mean there should not be any other layers. Anyways, let me go back and I will show you how to fix this. In the bulk mockup, there is an option called, go to settings, then design layer, resize to guides and align to guides.

So what we can do, like you can see, I mean the bulk creator of this template want us to put our design files in a white space. So we will just remove everything, let the wooden frame be there, remove the white part and remove the dark part as well or you can keep those two. We will go to view and then where does the layer go, I mean guides go, guides, clear guides.

I would not want any guides. Now, if you can see the ruler here, that’s fine. If you do not see, press ctrl R to bring on the rulers and from the rulers, create four guides, not less than four, not more than four, just four guides and create it so that we can confine the region where our design file is to be placed.

So if you could check the bulk mockup settings, we have this to resize to guides and align to guides. When we check these two settings and we provide the inside the smart object, four guides, all the design files will now be placed inside this place, which is actually you want. If you do not select this resize to align to guide, all the files that will be placed, it will be placed, you know, considering the entire canvas, but now it will be placed inside, I mean, the intersection of this four guides.

So remember, there must not be more than four guides or less than four guides. If so, I mean, these two options will not work. And I will have to remove the smart object layer because inside the smart object, we do not want any smart object layer.

Create a new layer. I think that’s all. So now when bulk mockup will work, it will open the smart object icon and it will place the design.

Let me grab the same design. Sorry, why did this happen? I think it did not save properly. So you follow what I said.

The other way to fix this would be, I mean, this is the second method. The first method I already told you to use this resize to guides, but make sure that changes are reflected. The other way would be select these three layers, duplicate them onto the main document.

Okay. And close this. Don’t save.

We have it here. Press control T, place it where you want. Okay.

And one more layer will duplicate. Sorry, let me reiterate everything. Let me get back.

Okay. So we have this one. I will open the smart object layer.

I select all the layers from here. Duplicate this onto the frame shoulder. Close this.

Press control T, place everything over here. And you may want to delete this one. So we have deleted the previous one.

Now, if I check view, guides, clear guide. So now, I mean, this is the exact placement we want. I mean, inside the smart object, we do not want any other layers or anything that kind.

Okay. And also you can fill in with black color or maybe white color. And we’ll change the name to maybe one.

Let it not have accurate design here. And over here, we’ll change it to accurate design. So this is how the smart object should be set up.

Okay. It should be on the top and inside the smart object, there should be nothing there. Only blank canvas where our design is supposed to be placed.

And so I think, you know, following this method of correction would be best for you. Put all the frames and shadows and all on the main template rather than inside the smart object. So check all your template files and try to fix it like this.

How to Fix Mockup Designs That Don’t Fit the Canvas (Step-by-Step Guide)

The issue discussed in this video happens when a mockup design does not align properly within the canvas while using Bulk Mockup in Photoshop.

This occurs because Bulk Mockup works exclusively through smart object layers, and if those layers are incorrectly structured, the design automatically expands to the full canvas instead of staying within the intended frame.

To solve this, the first step is understanding how Bulk Mockup places designs. When it opens a smart object, it removes all internal layers and automatically resizes the inserted design.

If your smart object contains extra layers, frames, or backgrounds, the placement will break.

Method 1: Using Guides to Control Design Placement (Recommended)

Open Your Smart Object Layer

  • Double-click on the smart object in your template to open it.
  • Remove any unnecessary layers such as white backgrounds, dark overlays, or extra graphics. Keep only the empty canvas where the design should go.

Clear Existing Guides

  • Go to the menu: View → Guides → Clear Guides.
  • If rulers aren’t visible, press Ctrl + R (Windows) or Cmd + R (Mac) to enable them.

Create Four Guides

  • Using the rulers, drag four guides to define the exact area where your design should fit.
  • Important: Use exactly four guides—no more, no less.
  • These guides will define the “safe area” for all design placements.

Adjust Bulk Mockup Settings

  • Open Bulk Mockup Settings.
  • Enable Resize to Guides and Align to Guides.
  • This ensures all designs inserted will automatically resize and align within the guides instead of the full canvas.

Test the Design Placement

  • Insert any design file into the smart object.
  • It should now fit perfectly inside the guide area without stretching or overlapping unwanted parts.

Method 2: Manual Smart Object Cleanup (Alternative)

Open the Smart Object

  • Double-click the smart object to open it.

Select and Duplicate Layers

  • Select all layers inside the smart object (frames, shadows, backgrounds).
  • Duplicate them onto the main template document.

Close the Smart Object Without Saving

  • This keeps your original smart object clean for bulk placement.

Reposition Duplicated Layers

  • Use Ctrl + T (Windows) or Cmd + T (Mac) to transform and position the duplicated layers where you want them on the main template.

Create a Clean Smart Object

  • Inside the smart object, leave only a blank canvas for the design.
  • Ensure no additional layers exist—this allows Bulk Mockup to place designs correctly.

Test Bulk Mockup

  • Insert a design to see that it now fits perfectly inside the smart object without being distorted.

For best results, always keep frames, shadows, and decorative elements on the main template, not inside the smart object. This ensures consistent and accurate bulk mockup generation.

KEY TAKEAWAY:

Bulk Mockup issues happen due to improper smart object setup. Use exactly four guides or rebuild clean smart objects to ensure perfect design placement every time.

FAQ

Why does Bulk Mockup stretch my design to the full canvas?

Bulk Mockup resizes designs to the smart object canvas when guides are not defined or extra layers exist inside the smart object.

How many guides are required for Bulk Mockup to work correctly?

Exactly four guides are required. Fewer or more than four will disable the resize and align functions.

Should frames and shadows be inside the smart object?

No. Frames and shadows should stay on the main template, not inside the smart object.

What happens if there are layers inside the smart object?

Bulk Mockup removes or ignores internal layers, causing incorrect scaling and placement.

Is there an alternative if guides don’t work?

Yes. You can manually duplicate layers from the smart object to the main document and rebuild a clean smart object with a blank canvas.
