This is a very small and easy tutorial on how to make a mockup with smart objects but it’s super useful for any designer or POD and Dropshipping business owners.

It’s specially useful for people who’re in love with AI art. You can turn any image generated by AI into your own mockup template after this.

In this tutorial we will be taking an image of a frame generated by Midjourney and turning it into a mockup template.

Step One in Creating a Mockup With Smart Object

First thing first, grab your AI generated artwork and open it in Photoshop.

Then click the rectangular tool and make a rectangle on the frame. Don’t worry it doesn’t have to fit perfectly at first.

taking a rectangular shape on the frame

You then have to click on the appearance tab or bring out the properties tab where you’ll make the rectangular fill color to white and the “stroke” option as “none”.

changing the fill color to white

The result will look like below.

result of all previous steps, a white rectangular shape

Then change the opacity from the “Layer” tab so you can see the frame underneath.

Now choose the rectangle in the “Layer” tab, then “right-click” and choose the “convert to smart object option”

Step Two in Creating a Mockup With Smart Object

After this step, press “Ctrl+T” if you’re using windows or “Cmd+T” if you’re on a Mac.

This will give you the option to control the rectangle as you wish.

Now, you have to be very precise for the next step as that will decide the quality and usefulness of all the work you’re doing here.

You can press “Alt+Spacebar+Mouse left button” and then scroll up or down to zoom in and out for better control.

Then right-click on the rectangle and choose distort.

distorting the rectangle to fit the desired area

Now you can distort the rectangle as you wish to make the smart object as you like or depending on the image.

For our example image, we will be matching its four corners of the rectangle with the corners of the frame.

Just grab the anchor points and position them like this and hit enter.

The hardest part of this process is done.

Click the rectangle from “Layers” and change the opacity back to 100%.

The result will look like this.

smart object is almost ready

The process is over but you may want to fine tune the output a bit more.

If you zoom in, you’ll see there are some shadows that has been automatically added to the frame.

So, we will add some inner glow to it.

Choose the rectangle from the “Layers” tab and go to “fx” and choose “Inner Glow”.

Change the setting of the tab similar to this –

Or change the options as you wish.

Now our mockup made with Smart Object is 100% done.

If you want to see the video of the whole process, checkout this video from our BulkMockup YouTube channel made by our founder Vikash Kumar Prajapati.

This finished output is a PSD mockup template which we buy from marketplaces and it works the same.

Step Three in Creating a Mockup With Smart Object

Double click on the rectangular and grab your design, then resize the design to fit it as you like. In our case we will fit it end to end like this.

Press “Ctrl+S” on windows or “Cmd+S” on Mac to save the file and you’re done.

The finished product will look like this.

Save it as a PSD file and now you can use the output file with BulkMockup as well.

In this tutorial, we went from an AI generated normal jpeg image to a useful PSD mockup in some really easy stem.

With this you can make all your AI generated images into useful PSD mockup templates which you can use yourself or sell on marketplaces like ETSY.
