How to Decrease File Size of Mockups
This tutorial shows you how to export smaller mockup files for web, Etsy, and other print-on-demand listings in Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin. The fastest way to reduce file size is to lower the image dimensions, use 72 DPI for web use, and export as JPG when you do not need transparency.
Use PNG only when you need a transparent background. For standard listing images, JPG usually creates smaller files.
Before you begin
Make sure you are using Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin with a Smart Object-based PSD mockup in Adobe Photoshop. If you need help confirming your template setup, see Pre-Requisites For Working With Bulk Mockup.
How to reduce mockup file size
Set your export for web use. If your mockups are for online listings, keep the resolution at 72 DPI.
Reduce the image dimensions. Resize the longest side of your mockup to about 1000 to 1500 pixels. This keeps the image clear for web viewing while lowering the final file size.
Choose JPG when transparency is not needed. JPG files are usually smaller than PNG files for normal mockup images.
Use PNG only for transparent exports. If your template needs a transparent background, export as PNG instead. Learn more in Can Bulk Mockup Generate PNG Files with Transparent Backgrounds?.
Generate a small test batch first. Export one or two mockups, check the file size and image clarity, then run the full batch once the result looks right.
Recommended settings for smaller files
Resolution: 72 DPI
Longest side: 1000 to 1500 pixels
Format: JPG for standard mockups, PNG only when transparency is required
If you are exporting large batches, test one design first. A smaller test export helps you confirm the quality before generating hundreds of files.
When to use JPG vs PNG
Use JPG for most Etsy and POD product listing images because it creates smaller file sizes.
Use PNG only when your final image needs a transparent background. PNG files are useful for overlays and transparent assets, but they are usually larger.
Keep your exports organized
After choosing a smaller export size, you can also organize your batch output using Export Folder Settings. See How to Organize Exports with Export Folder Settings.
Quick recap
To decrease mockup file size, use 72 DPI, reduce the longest side to 1000 to 1500 pixels, and export as JPG unless you need transparency. These settings are a good fit for most web and marketplace listings.
