Bulk create Front and Back t-shirt mockup | Batch Replace 2 Smart Object Layers in Photoshop
Use this tutorial to batch create front and back t-shirt mockups with the Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin. This workflow is ideal when your PSD template has separate smart object layers for the front and back views and each view needs its own design file.
Before you begin, make sure you are using Adobe Photoshop CC 2022 or later, your t-shirt template is a PSD with editable smart object layers, and the main smart object layer is named exactly @design. If you are new to setup, see Creating First Mockup With Photoshop Plugin Bulk Mockup (Complete Beginner Guide).
How this workflow works
The Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin handles front and back apparel mockups through its multiple smart object workflow. The root design folder supplies files for the main @design layer, and matching subfolders supply files for the other smart object layers in your PSD.
For a front and back t-shirt template, that usually means one file goes to the front design layer and another file goes to the back design layer. The subfolder name must match the Photoshop layer name exactly or those files will be skipped.
Step 1: Check the smart object layers in your t-shirt PSD
Open your t-shirt mockup PSD in Photoshop.
In the Layers panel, identify the smart object layer used for the main design area.
Rename that main smart object layer to
@design.Identify the second smart object layer that should receive the back design.
Keep note of the exact layer name for that second smart object.
Use @design exactly for the main smart object layer. The name is case-sensitive.
If your PSD contains more than two independent design layers, use the same method for each additional layer. For the full multi-layer setup, see Does Bulk Mockup replace more than one or multiple smart objects?.
Step 2: Build the correct design folder structure
Set up one main design folder for the batch. Place the files for @design in the root of that folder, then create a subfolder for the second smart object layer.
Create a main folder for your t-shirt design batch.
Place the front design files directly inside the main folder.
Create one subfolder for the back design layer.
Name that subfolder exactly the same as the second smart object layer in Photoshop.
Place the back design files inside that subfolder.

├── Back/
│ ├── back-001.png
│ ├── back-002.pngThe subfolder name must match the smart object layer name exactly. If the layer is named Back Design, the folder must also be named Back Design.
Step 3: Open the Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin
In Photoshop, go to Plugins > Bulk Mockup.
In the Main tab, select your PSD Templates Folder.
Select your Design File Folder.
Select your Export Folder.
Your PSD Templates Folder should contain the t-shirt mockup PSD. Your Design File Folder should contain the root front files and the matching subfolder for the back layer.
Step 4: Enable multiple smart object processing
Stay in the Main tab of the Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin.
Enable Multiple Smart Objects.
Review the selected folders before starting the batch.
This tells the plugin to match subfolders to the additional smart object layers in your PSD.
Step 5: Choose export settings
Open the Settings tab.
Select your preferred export format.
Choose any file naming or export folder settings you want to use for this batch.
If needed, set a Resize Method and alignment option that fits your t-shirt template.
If you want more control over export organization, see Batch Replace Smart Object Layer in Photoshop | 8 Practical Use Cases.
Step 6: Start generating the front and back mockups
Return to the Main tab.
Click Start Generating.
Wait while the Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin replaces the front and back smart object layers for each design set.
Open the Export Folder and review the generated mockups.
The plugin processes files in ascending alphabetical order, so consistent file naming helps keep front and back designs paired the way you expect.
Troubleshooting
The back design does not appear: Check that the subfolder name matches the second smart object layer name exactly.
The plugin only updates one side: Confirm that Multiple Smart Objects is enabled and that the second layer is an independent smart object.
The wrong front and back files are paired: Rename files in a consistent sequence such as 001, 002, 003 so the alphabetical order stays aligned.
The template does not work in the plugin: Make sure the file is a PSD template with editable smart object layers.
