How To Make Photofic PSD Template Compatible With Bulk Mockup

Use this guide to prepare a Photofic PSD template so it works with Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin. Bulk Mockup works with PSD mockup templates that contain editable Smart Object layers, so the goal is to check the Photofic file, identify the correct design layer, and save the template in a plugin-ready format.

Before you start, use Adobe Photoshop CC 2022 or later and make sure your Photofic file is a PSD template with at least one editable Smart Object layer.

Step 1: Open the Photofic PSD template in Photoshop

  1. Open the Photofic template file in Adobe Photoshop.

  2. Go to the Layers panel and find the layer where your artwork should appear.

  3. In many templates, this layer is named something like Your Design, but use the actual design-placement layer in your PSD.

  4. Check whether that layer shows the Smart Object icon.

If the design layer does not have a Smart Object icon, Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin cannot use that layer as-is.

Check the Layers panel first so you can confirm the template uses a Smart Object design layer.

Step 2: Confirm the design area is editable

  1. Double-click the design Smart Object layer.

  2. Make sure Photoshop opens the design contents in a separate tab or Smart Object window.

  3. Place a test design or make a small visible change.

  4. Save the Smart Object and return to the main mockup.

  5. Confirm the design appears correctly inside the Photofic template.

If Photoshop does not let you edit the contents, or if the layer is only a flat image, the template is not ready for Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin yet.

If you hit that problem, see The command “Edit Contents” is currently not available in Photoshop.

Step 3: Rename the main design Smart Object to @design

  1. Go back to the main PSD file.

  2. Select the main Smart Object layer that should receive your artwork.

  3. Rename that layer to @design.

  4. Save the PSD template.

This is the recommended setup when your template uses one main Smart Object for the design.

If your Photofic template has separate Smart Objects for different print areas or views, do not force everything into one layer. Use the multiple smart object workflow instead.

Step 4: Check for multiple Smart Objects

  1. Review the Layers panel and count how many Smart Object design areas the template uses.

  2. If all views update from the same Smart Object, one @design layer is usually enough.

  3. If the template uses separate Smart Objects for different areas, prepare it for the multiple smart object workflow.

For a full setup, see How to Process Multiple Smart Object Layers in Bulk Mockup.

If Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin cannot detect the design layer, see There Is No Smart Object in Layer in This Template error.

Step 5: Save the Photofic template as a PSD

  1. Keep the file in PSD format.

  2. Make sure the Smart Object layer setup is saved.

  3. Store the finished template in a folder you can point to later as your PSD Templates Folder.

Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin reads PSD templates, so do not flatten the file before running it.

Step 6: Run the template in Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin

  1. In Photoshop, go to Plugins > Bulk Mockup.

  2. Set the PSD Templates Folder to the folder that contains your Photofic PSD template.

  3. Set the Design File Folder to the folder that contains the artwork you want to apply.

  4. Set the Export Folder to choose where the generated mockups should be saved.

  5. Adjust the Resize Method if your design appears too large or too small inside the template.

  6. Click Start Generating.

This process lets Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin replace the Smart Object contents automatically across your design files.

What to do if the design looks too big

If your design fills too much of the print area after generation, the PSD is still compatible, but the Smart Object contents need adjustment.

  • Open the Smart Object manually and scale the test artwork until it fits the print area correctly.

  • Save the Smart Object and recheck the main mockup.

  • Run the PSD again in Bulk Mockup Photoshop Plugin.

  • Try a different Resize Method if the output still does not match the layout you want.

The recording title indicates a “design too big” issue, so this is the first thing to verify before assuming the template is unsupported.
